Gold-tipped page edges. Some wear to board extremities, light soiling to boards, small surface tear toward bottom gutter of front fly page and brief starting at hinge in same location. Name of former owner lightly written to front endpaper and words "Christmas 1885" to rear endpaper, both in light pencil. Light foxing on the endpapers but NO FOXING NOR MARKINGS to interior. In remarkably sound condition. Very Good.

A complete set of eight hardcover books handsomely bound in 3/4 red morocco with marbled boards and endpapers. Each spine has five raised bands and four gilt thistle designs. The top foredges are trimmed in gilt. The tips of the endpapers are faintly tanned. Foxing in each volume. Occasional pencil notes and underlining in volume III. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure. The covers are in fine condition, clean and smooth. A gorgeous, displayable set in collectible condition! Each volume has a black and white frontispiece, decorated title page, and attached ribbon page marker, and measures approx. 6.8" x 4.4.

A first edition of this scarce, heavily illustrated work by Allan Cunningham. With seventy-two engravings across the two volumes, collated and complete. To form such a comprehensive display of the first masters, Cunningham referred to a wide variety of public and private English collections. Alongside works from over fifty artists, Cunningham offers an account of the individual style of each painter. Ink inscription to recto of the front endpaper in volume I 'Marian Ryan, from an affectionate father, John Cotton. Binder's sticker to front pastedown of both volumes. 'Kelly Binder. 15 Gower Place&apos. Bookplate to rear pastedown in volume II, and to the front pastedown in volume II. Blind stamp to rear free endpaper from Neatham Mill Library in both volumes. In full calf binding. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards and the spine, and a little at the joints. Front hinge of volume I a little tender.
